Pinwheels On Display at Nichols Elementary

Cabell Midland High School Ceramic 1 students created ceramic pinwheels to bring awareness to Child Abuse Prevention Month (April).  The work titled “Some of These Things are Not Like the Others”, was painted by Nichols Elementary School students.

According to the non-profit organization, Prevent Child Abuse America, the pinwheel has become the national symbol for child abuse prevention.  The pinwheels, though whimsical and brightly colored initially invoke thoughts of the carefree innocence of children.  Deeper meanings are discovered as the viewer realizes some pieces have been broken yet repaired, broken beyond repair, or completely destroyed (representative of the lives lost to abuse).

The traveling installation of the pinwheels, currently displayed at Nichols Elementary, will   move to Cabell Midland on or about April 17 and remain there through the end April.    On May 13, 2017, the pinwheels will be on display at the Nancy Cartmill Gardens in downtown Barboursville.  They will be on permanent display at the new Barboursville Community Garden located at the site of the former pool.

“The students at Cabell Midland and Nichols Elementary encourage those who can to donate to local and national charities, such as Child Abuse America,” says Christina Fry, ceramics teacher at Cabell Midland.
